what's so unfashionable about peace, love and flowers?

i kept hearing this song on the radio that i liked, and today i found out it was radiohead's 'there there'. i really like the tune, but i really don't want to be listening to negative stuff, because i focus on a lot of negativity already and i'm trying to focus on the positive, not in a head-in-the-sand way,but to lean more in that direction.

is it my imagination or is it hip to be negative? i'm not making fun of people who have legitimate pain and sadness,i'm just observing that it seems to be a trend.

i was listening to my rhino comp 'summer of love' today and it's a stark contrast. the sixties wasn't ALL peace, love, and flowers, but it certainly was prevalent.

to quote the inimitable elvis costello:

"what's so funny about peace, love and understanding?"

It is my observation that many artists rely on anger to perform. Also the woes of the world sell. Just look at the headlines. If peace and love sold, that would be the focus of the media. It is a catch-22 situation, the more you hear about anger, and negative stuff the more it is a problem. My solution has been to turn off most of the media, and focus on pouring in things that I know are positive. I suppose that makes me a bit of a Polyanna, but I'd rather do that than continue to focus on the negative.
So keep up the good work. You aren't alone in noticing this stuff!

We have come from the idealistic land of hope to the saddened land of despair. Still I tilt at windmills hoping to make the world a better place. I pray I don't become cynical that I find the hope I need to continue forward.

I totally agree..what you put into your mind has an influence on your attitude. I think that some people do think it's hip to be dark, moody and sarcastic towards lighter and more up-beat themes. But in my opinion, it's their loss, as they sink slowly down into the depths...LOL...by their own choices. How smart is that??
I get so high when I paint, and am so happy to be doing what I love, that I just want to sprinkle fairy-dust on everyone. If they can't handle my peace, love and joy, good....they'll go hang out with like-minded morons and blast each other with negative energy, maybe write another fatalistic song. Gee, I wonder what that experience is like. Not.

...a mere coinky-dink? My friend steve emeiled me today he's going to see Elvis Costello! Poor guy, I made him fill out a questionnaire and learned far more from that than I have corresponding for four years! Like for instance, his age! Now I finally know! He has a lovely Liverpool accent but is not from Liverpool exactly.

Well, Robert Anton Wilson says that it is fashionable to be pessimistic in the world of writers and publishing--something I have found to still be true. Go figure...
