ya can't get theyah from heyah
new englanders are incapable of giving directions. they do not know the names of streets, nor do they remember the numbers on major highways, nor do they have the foggiest idea how far one place is from another, nor can they tell you which way is north. their street systems are so Old World and convoluted that they can find their way around only by feel. if their surroundings begin to look familiar to them, they attempt to find their way by an intuitive process as mysterious as that which leads the swallows back to capistrano. under no circumstances can they describe this process in a simple declarative sentence. when a massachusetts taxi driver was asked for directions to a nearby museum, his response was 'gee, that's hard.'

heh heh. sorta true. probably why we've heard the phrase 'you can't get there from here'. it's probably just easier to say that than try to explain how to get there. also,in general, yankees are not as hospitable as some folks in other areas are. there's a joke about a sign saying 'welcome to new hampshire. now go home.' which is funny because the tourist trade is a big part of the economy. even if the old man did fall off the mountain last spring. i don't blame him...he must have been pretty tired.
i'm even worse because i generally avoid highways and i don't do much shopping. so someone will ask me,say, where mcdonald's is and even though it's just down the street,i can't tell them exactly where, because i don't get take-out food or shop very often on my breaks and/or before or after work.
but i do know where north is because i can tell by the position of the sun. i can't say i can navigate by starlight though, but i usually only drive on roads i know after dark!
