tangled up in blue
i just dug out my 'essential bob dylan' cd. 'knockin' on heaven's door' is one of my all-time favorite songs. i just love that sound. my friend george says it's because it's got lots of reverb. yum. reverb. anyway.
another one i really like is 'hurricane' about rubin hurricane carter. it's got fiddles...the album that song was on had lots of fiddlin',which i love. i saw the movie 'hurricane' a while back and i thought it was great. of course,it made me cry and it was very inspiring.
you can say what you will about dylan's voice (and most people do) but he sounds lovely on 'lay lady lay'...it's an incredibly sexy song. that's from 'nashville skyline'. i like country-rock,bluegrass and folk-rock,and now strangely,i'm even getting to like some old country & western stuff. i like patsy cline. i always laugh when i think of her song 'crazy' being played in the farm store in 'field of dreams' when ray's asking the good old farmers if they've ever heard voices when they're out in their cornfields. ha.
there's a bunch of old c&w songs in a movie i watched recently called 'big eden'. darn it all, there's no soundtrack for the movie, but i think i'm going to write to somebody and ask them to do so. 'big eden' is seen as a 'gay date movie' but it's really even more about a sense of community. i love movies and tv shows that are about a bunch of people who live in close proximity and includes all sorts of eccentric folks. it reminds me of the hometown i grew up in and i really miss that aspect of life...community of course, but the interesting folks too. that's why i love 'northern exposure' and 'the matchmaker' and 'chocolat' and 'amelie'.
in the town where i grew up,there was an eccentric millionaire who flew his airplane underneath the railroad trestle...granted,it was the highest railroad trestle in the state until they tore it down a few years back, but still...doesn't that sound like something maurice on northern exposure would do?
instead of a milkman,we had a milk lady. she was pretty dedicated. when one of my sisters was a baby, she once tramped through four feet of snow that we hadn't gotten up to shovel yet to get to our front door and leave milk for us. she delivered orange juice and chocolate milk too.
outside,it's been a beautiful bright breezy day on the cool side (because the temps changed so fast, rather than gradually,it feels rather chilly.) i'm hoping to get my window screens replaced tomorrow...finally got a memo from the property management company. it said that the screens were probably left off because they only did a basecoat on friday and will do the final painting on monday and...i'm hoping...replace the screens! it still seems weird to leave them off all weekend.
i'm on vacation this week, and i've been pretty depressed. it could be a good thing, because maybe some alone-time will be healing. i never know.
back to the subject of music...it certainly has contributed to keeping me alive all these years.. ,in the figurative as well as the literal sense.
thank god,or whatever, for guitars.
