double drat
i'm crushed. the red sox just lost in a heartbreaker in the 11th inning, which i was listening to as i drove home tonight.
i'm a lapsed red sox fan,but i was really excited at the thought of them winning the pennant for the first time since 1985,i think it was. i got to go to a world series game that year, which was really cool.a friend had season tickets and asked if i wanted to buy one and go with him to the game. the ticket was $60 which was an insane amount of money for me at the time, but i couldn't say no! not only that, but i didn't even have to drive to boston. he drove down to boston college and we took the t into the city for the game.
anyhow...
i forgot how much i loved baseball, how beautiful and graceful and calming and zen it can be.i used to live and die with the red sox, which sounds like a line straight out of 'field of dreams',but it's true.i started watching it when i was thirteen or so. initially,my intention was just to bond with my dad,who had no one to appreciate baseball with. eventually,my younger sister michele and i ended up being big sports fans, and dad took us to our first game at fenway park against those nasty yankees. maybe this is sour grapes, but it must be boring to win so much.
i used to read lots of books about baseball. my favorite one is a truly beautiful book called the summer game by roger angell.
ah,well. maybe next year.

Baseball Dreaming
I didn't even get to watch the game and I was bummed. I went to bed before the 11th inning, and got up with this hard lump in the lower portion of my gut. I just KNEW we lost even though we were winning when I went to bed. Everyone says they should have pulled Pedro! It quite reminded me of Shoeless Joe Jackson and Eight Men Out and the Chicago White Sox throwing the World Series of...what year was it? 1919? I love the nostalgic white bread/50s appeal of baseball but will never be a true fan I don't think. Still love "Field of Dreams" though!
