on the subject of LOL and ROFL*

i think it would be good if i laughed more. i was listening to a dj talk to a comic whose cd had 'gone cardboard' (his words) and he mentioned the obvious fact that laughing releases tension. and i thought, hey,it wouldn't do me any harm to release some tension...

so i pondered what makes me laugh. and a lot of what people call comedy is stuff i don't think is funny. when i look in the comedy section of the video store (and i rarely do) none of the comedies look funny to me. my mom loved 'ernest goes to camp'. i just thought it was stupid and boring. she probably thought the stooges were funny too,but i didn't. i love the marx brothers. well,it's partly because i had a post-mortem crush on harpo a few years back. but i love groucho quotes.

it's not that i personally have no sense of humor. in fact, even though i was never the class clown,i do like to make people laugh and use the opportunity when it comes up. often people have told me i'm funny and i love it when they laugh at my wry or ridiculous or witty comments. my friend george called me witty, which i liked. yay,i'm witty! so,i'm funny, even if nothing makes ME laugh.

well, that's not true. sometimes i crack myself up. no,really. i guess it's a good thing because i don't have much time for a social life.

anyway, what DOES make me laugh? i mean, really laugh out loud?

woody allen. bill bryson. mystery science theatre. my sisters. some of my friends.

maybe i should read bill bryson's chapter on income tax in his book i'm a stranger here on a weekly basis. though i think after awhile it might not be funny anymore. i almost died laughing reading that aloud to my mother a while back.

i also like dark humor, but right now i can't think of a good example.

the really funny thing is that i don't even think this entry is funny.

; )

well,maybe a little.

*is that the 'correct' acronym for rolling on the floor laughing? i'm not really up on aol/instant message speak since i don't use it and basically dislike it.

After I decided I couldn't stay on the antidepressants I was taking last year, I figured a ticket to the improv theater here in town would be cheaper than a prescription and office visit anyway, and would probably do more good with fewer side effects. Life got in the way though, and I've not gone there for a very long time. It was great therapy though. It wasn't always funny, but it sure felt good overall.

If you've not already seen it, may I recommend Family Guy? It is the single funniest show I've ever seen. Ever. And Seth McFarlane is more-or-less yours and my age so the cultural references he uses, you'll definitely get a kick out of. My favorite? A Brady Bunch spoof in which both Greg and Jan get sent to a flaming pit of hell for misbehaving

:D

family guy used to be on fox but its now on cartoon network during their 'adult swim' segments. you can also watch it on dvd too.

that's nonsense they want your ssn for cable. do you have time warner? they're nazis but we're thinking of going back cos its working out cheaper than DISH for the same crap.

the things we do to be entertained, right? LOL

it's true, you do make me laugh. :o)
i laugh a lot but i'm not sure it helps!
i rarely watch comedies unless it's by accident when my kids have something on the tv. lately i've been diverting my dark thoughts with some even darker scary movies. :o) no idea why but THAT does help!
:oP

Yes, correct acronym. To get even crazier, you could say ROFLMAO - rolls on the floor laughing my ass off or FOCL - falling out of chair laughing or LMFAO - laughing my fucking ass off. >:)

Anyway, I have the opposite problem. I find absolutley everything in life funny. I end up offending people, because they're not trying to be funny and I'm in hysterics sometimes. ;)

"There are two types of people in life: the miserable and the horrible." -- Woody Allen

Believe me, you're not horrible.

...recommended to me "Christmas Vacation" wherein I believe the family cat gets electricuted by chewing on the light cord wires. Sunny...No! Ha! I like the Bill Bryson idea and haven't read that one myself. And...isn't it funny I made you laugh before I even read this entry? See you soon! Love,
