water heater update

this isn't very exciting, but in case anyone cares:!

a plumber was supposed to come over and look at my hot water heater today, sometime after 1:00. so i've been home fidgeting for a couple of hours...just couldn't relax because having a serviceperson come over can make me uncomfortable.

anyway,a bit after 3,i decided to call and ask when they'd be over. someone called back and said they probably wouldn't make it until tomorrow. i said i wouldn't be here tomorrow and did he think it was a serious enough problem so it can't wait for another month, which is the next time i have a free monday? so he asked what the problem was,and basically told me it isn't a big deal. that it didn't sound like anything to worry about (this is EXACTLY what i wanted to know when i called last week, and i talked to a different guy) and that since it's electric and not gas,the worse than can happen is that the thermostat would pop and it would have to be reset...either by telling me how over the phone or their coming over here to do it. and basically,he didnt' think it sounded like that would happen either. that sometimes it just makes those noises...well,that's what i wanted to know in the first place! so overall i'm relieved that they don't have to come over...at least not right now! yay! and i don't have to spend the landlord's money, which makes me feel better.

aaahhhh.
i can relax now. for a few minutes at least...

thank goodness! men can build up these little household jobs to the point they seem intimidating to us (i think it makes them feel important :o))then when push comes to shove and they don't feel like doing something they let us crack the code. i'm glad you don't have to worry about it. good thoughts for the coming week at work. i'm already a little testy from the little bit of shopping i've done. it's the boys' 18th birthday tomorrow.

As coincidence would have it, I'm going to be flushing my hot water heater soon. I've never done it before, but from this webpage I printed out it looks pretty easy. Especially since it's electrical and not gas. Though with electrical, you have to be careful to refill the water before turning the water heater back on.

Not that you really care. I'm more reminding myself. : )

I'm flushing mine because it isn't maintaining hot water in the shower long enough. They generally recommend it be flushed once a year (though this is overdoing it in my opinion), and ours hasn't been flushed in at least 7.

When it goes awhile without being flushed, sediment starts to build up at its base, which makes the water heater work harder, wasting energy (increasing your electric bill) and reducing its lifespan. I'm not exactly sure how the sediment makes the water heater work harder, but it probably has to do with impeding the flow rate and/or reducing the conductivity at the electrical nodes.

They have tons of websites on doing it yourself if you're interested. Though if it was MY landlord's money (as opposed to my own), I'd probably let them bring in someone to do it, since 240 volts always scares me a little, regardless of my double and triple checking that I've cut the power.
