in recognition of the sixtieth anniversary of d-day,i'm posting with my 'smokey d-day' icon. okay,it's ben caplan as walter 'smokey' gordon in the series 'band of brothers' (one of the best things i've ever seen on any screen),so it's not an historical artifact. but it's a good icon for today especially, and smokey gordon was a real paratrooper who dropped behind the lines before the invasion on d-day.i still don't know why they blackened their faces, though. at first i thought it was sort of additional camouflauge (though i don't know anyone literally white enough to glow in the dark,or anything),but they didn't do that any other time, according to the series.

hmmm

It wasn't camouflauge? I didn't know that. I always just assumed. Yeah for Smokey!!
