and i can understand a lot of that!
and i can understand a lot of that!

i couldn't find...
Re: i couldn't find...
yeah, mom used to call me that A LOT. it's 'head of straw',which is,according to babelfish,
'tete de paille'.
of course that's french,so i think the 'straw' part is different in joual.

Re: i couldn't find...
what's your first language?
Re: i couldn't find...
do you speak proper french?(as in NOT french canadian, joual,etc..)
Re: i couldn't find...
i took spanish in high school and college but haven't used it much, surprisingly, considering there's quite a large hispanic population here and unlike my relatives, who learned english,it seems many hispanics rely on translators or things being in spanish rather than learning english.
anyhow...
my other grandparents spoke a funny combination of joual french and english. it was pretty funny to hear my mother on the phone, speaking half and half. i don't know why they did that.i mentioned it to my dad,and i think he hardly noticed, but he did it too!
a lot of insulting things mom said to me in french were actually said not in a nasty tone, but in a humorous one. besides being called 'head of straw' a lot--and i was and am stubborn--she used to also say 'mange le terre' when i whined about things. i can't spell very well because it was all verbal, but i think you can make out that one!
one of my favorites--because it made me laugh--is 'jouie in le schme [word for road of street],feh crozee. i'm definitely using some phonetic spelling there.'if you play in the road you'll get smushed'. ha. heard that one? and know how it would be spelled?
it was nice to stumble across that page on joual so that some things were familiar. i used to ask my mother what things meant in french, including french subtitled films, and often she didn't know, and i couldn't figure out why, since french was HER first language. now i can see why she didn't know all the words.
Re: i couldn't find...
There is big difference between french here and french in France or Belgium. When I went there, I had to be really carefull how I was speaking so they would understand me, and try and copy their accent! It's sounds sooo different. But I like my not so proper french. It sounds way more relaxed or something!
