amen!
oprah: and you're hopeful for the planet?
archbishop tutu: oh,absolutely. our world is a work in progress.it's going to be okay.
what an amazing man. and he's saying this from the perspective of someone who has seen some pretty extreme stuff in his lifetime. he walks his talk as a follower of jesus (the term 'christian' is far too tainted to use!). this is from a wonderful short interview in the february issue of oprah's mag.
i'd say 'god, how could we possibly have sunk to such levels?' and then i'd hear a victim of such an atrocity say 'i am ready to forgive.' south africa has become a testament to the fact that people are fundamentally good.yes, there is evil. but it's not the norm. the norm is good.

one of these days i may find my church home. you are probably familiar with unity/new thought? it's a different way of looking at jesus,i think.i would like to go to one of their churches, but there aren't any around here.
i once tried out the local unitarian universalists but the congregation here was too intellectual. i wanted more 'spirit' in my church going!
anyway,i do see many wonderful things in the anglican church and you and the archbishop both have that anglican/episcopalian vibe that i like. hey,you gave matthew fox somewhere to go!
strangely,i have a friend who used to be an episcopal priest but converted to catholicism because he was looking for something more conservative. though i was raised catholic, and thankfully it isn't as conservative as the fundamentalist churches.

He was really truly amazing. We all left the talk completely awed. Here was this man who had suffered so much, seen so many horrible things, and yet still honestly believed in all that is good and hopeful in humanity.
He was amazing.
