beautiful curves

i've realized i have an esthetic love of baseball. i don't know if anyone else does, but this is when it first occurred to me...

last fall, even though i hadn't followed baseball since high school (30 years, during which i was busy being slightly underground famous as a fanzine writer, indulging my love of music and other things),i couldn't help but notice that for the second year in a row the red sox were almost going to win the pennant. (does anyone still call it 'the pennant'? or is just the alcs?)

so i started listening, since i didn't have cable tv and the one channel that arrived on my tv set wasn't the channel the games were on and i don't have a computer--to the games on the terrible a.m. station i could barely hear (d'oh. this year i found them on the fm station.)

anyhow,i heard them fuzzily win the pennant! and later on i heard them fuzzily win the world series, which was a heartening sign of the apocalypso (revealing the truth while dancing your heart out) that anything is possible. YES!!!! YESSS!!!

but of course,i digress,as i naturally do.on a late saturday shift, while waiting for some other folks to finish their tasks so we could all go home,i sat down in our breakroom and watched an inning or so of one of the world series games...and fell in love with baseball all over again. just to see the way that ball moved from the pitcher's hand through space over toward the hitter and the catcher and the umpire and home plate...ah,now that is what i was missing!

it's not strange, then, that my favorite all-time pitcher is luis tiant, who used to do a lovely pirouette on the mound before he threw the ball. oh,and he was damned good too. and funny. and i'm sure he's still funny! i was thrilled to see him on the world series dvd...same fu manchu or whatever the facial hair configuration he's favored for years and with lovely added silver touches. i can appreciate those!

now,i've actually been watching the yankees the most because they have the most esthetically pleasing players as far as i'm concerned...chien-ming wang's pitching, and robinson cano's batting, for two. actually,a-rod also has a beautiful swing, and i just hope someday he'll grow into a clutch hitter--yes,i believe in clutch hitting...i do! i do! i think it really is kind of sad to be a candidate for a triple crown batting title and not hit the ball when guys are on base...now,clutch hitting doesn't always have to be physically beautiful for me to see it and appreciate it...that's just another aspect.

well, this brings me 'round to the point of why i haven't watched the homeboys (since i live in new hampshire) all that much. i've had a bit of trouble getting around the fact that manny ramirez has the filthiest batting helmet in baseball, and i adore mark bellhorn but he always looks like he needs a shower...oooh,greasy hair! and all that is so superficial,i know. and i've always liked bronson arroyo...he just seems so likable, but i hate his highkick pitching style. and, well,i just don't really like curt schilling as a person, though i do admire his perserverance.

anyhow,i just got a really big boost to my day on saturday when i was driving to work and i heard this wonderful exhuberant version of the unofficial boston theme song, the standells 'dirty water'. of course dj's rarely tell you enough, but i do believe it's dear old bronson arroyo's version...i liked it better than the original, and i tend to like 'originals' better and am not a fan or remakes of things that don't really need to be remade. but this song just made me smile all day...and i'm weird like this, but it just makes me want to watch those homeboys a little bit more often and give them some slack for their lack of...er,esthetics. they've got other good qualities.

so,today,i watched a wonderful nailchewing game where wang finally got a long-deserved win,and he had to do it by allowing no runs...though of course he had help from the team defensively...since the yankees only got one run,and left people hanging on bases as usual, and i sneaked a peak at the bosox game here and there as they were playing at about the same time.i have a fondness for edgar renteria and he just seems to be having a tough time much of the time. nevertheless,i wish he'd tuck his shirt in a bit neater. heehee. those slovenly sox. i like the yankees' haircuts much better.

and,i'm sure i've babbled on long enough for now. and if no one reads it (and if you don't care about baseball, why would you?) that's okay because i've amused myself by writing it.

time for a snack...

Oh, I hear you...Red Sox fan that I am, I have to admit that the Yankees are just more pleasing to the eye, especially A-Rod's swing. The Red Sox are just so messy...but I love 'em. Doesn't George Steinbrenner (today's his birthday by the way...ugh) make his players conform to a certain hair-cut code, though? I'm with you on Schilling too...don't like him, his politics, or his inability to keep his mouth shut. :)
