my summer vacation

today was the first day of my vacation and it's been a lovely one.

i had lunch with my sister michele and 9-year-old nephew josh who is a huge baseball geek. i can appreciate that because i'm a bit of a baseball geek myself. we went to the thai restaurant down the street and had delicious food. i had vegetarian pad thai which was just yummy.

my sister was picking up the hall tree that she inherited from my mom. we had very little difficulty hauling it down the stairs and into her van. it was nice to see them both.

the last two days have been open window days which i adore. today was pretty hot but the humidity was really low,so i loved it.

today i watched a movie that is now on my list of favorites called 'little miss sunshine'. i will definitely have to recomment this to some members of my family,as it's about a family that's even crazier than ours! here's the last paragraph of a review posted a couple of days ago on amazon by suzanne of oklahoma city which i think jives with what i thought of it:

Little Miss Sunshine was simply a treat. An honest portrayal of dysfunction and family dynamics with clear insight into the characters that drive it. It could be called a dramedy, but to label it as either "comedy" or "drama" is missing the point. Like those who say The Godfather isn't about drama or violence, it's about family: So is Little Miss Sunshine. It ends up as more of a black comedy social satire. Featuring outstanding dialogue, a well constructed narrative and an ensemble cast performance not to be missed, it's one of the smartest and most surprising recent films I've seen. For the 'Super Freaks' in us all, I salute it.

i just started watching 'the curse of the golden flower' by the director of 'hero' and 'house of flying daggers' and of course it is incredibly beautiful.

Speaking of baseball, the Red Sox gotta stop playing mediocre before it's too late. The lack of comebacks is disturbing me and I think that they just need something to spark them or shake them up. They got the right pieces for the most part, they just need a collective slap in the face

josh said his favorite player used to be youk,to which i replied,'oh,he's not very good' and josh said 'what?!!!' but of course i was teasing him. now he says j.d. drew is his favorite,to which i said 'what?!!!' no,actually,i didn't but that's what i was thinking. i'm not impressed.

yeah,i don't know what's up with this team. they seem to get all their hits in one game,and then shut down. they've got to at least spread it out. of course,i don't know how you can do that intentionally. as my sister said,they've got to hit better against good pitching,because if they're in the playoffs,that's usually what the other playoff teams have. and good pitching alone can't win everything...ya gotta hit too,especially in the clutch. maybe if bill james believed in 'clutch' hitters,the sox would have more of that. not that i'm an expert--just my opinion.

Little Miss Sunshine really *spoke* to me, but my co-workers, Lisa and Rachel all seemed under-enthused. Are we crazy?

an ljer on my regular reading list had posted that he'd really liked it,but i didn't know for sure if i would. so many indie raves have been disappointments for me like 'me and you and everyone i know' and 'i <3 huckabees' so i wasn't hoping for much. and i LOVE it! the characters are great and annoying in their own ways and i ended up loving them all! i'm overusing the word,but the difference between this movie and those others is the love behind it all...the whole attitude. and beauty popping up where you least expect it. one part made me just blubber but i'll send that to you in email so i won't spoil for anyone who might read this. anyone,this is beyond soul spackle...it's fresh soul paint!
