my fun little solo road trip part deux
then i went to the library and returned some things and i wanted to see if they had the old rolling stone with the article when lord of the rings came out last year. no. it's either checked out or more likely gone forever...stolen. there werent any issues for the last half of 2001 there at all,and it comes out every two weeks. well,i suppose they MIGHT be all checked out,so maybe i'll try later.
i went downstairs to the book sale room and i havent gone down there in ages! wow, there was so much more than
when i was there last and so much good stuff (and tons of crap,of course, because i think so much is crap) that if i had more room i would have gotten a bunch of stuff. they sell the stuff ridiculously cheap.
here at least i found some stuff for mom...an old reader's digest and an old better homes and gardens, and a small book of the 'laughter the best medicine' columns from reader's digest. i gave them to her when i got home and i think she liked them.
for myself...
i got a book by jean cocteau called 'orphee' in the original french. i thought it would be fun to see if i could understand any of it...if not,i like sounding out the words in my head, because i love the sound of the french language! actually,it's a play and it's a really short booklet, and the copyright date is 1927. cool. maybe i'll try to read it and give it to my friend sean, who reads tons of stuff in french.
walker percy's 'the moviegoer' which i've heard good things about.
ram dass's 'grist for the mill'. in my opinion, anything by ram dass is a classic, because he's a classic!
breakfast at tiffany's by truman capote. i've always wanted to read the novel(ette) that the movie is based on. love the movie...its' partly why moonriver is my username on livejournal...that and the fact that i was listening to a version by morrissey who was singing it in his morrisseyesque way when i signed up for livejournal and needed a name. and oh,yeah,i like the song too! though maybe i should have called myself 'huckleberry friend' rather than 'moon river' ('wider than a mile'!!) but what the heck,i liked the sound of it.
roll your own:the complete guide to living in a truck, bus, van and camper
by jodi pallidini and beverly dubin
(it's a trade paperback...meaning larger than a pocket size,for $3.95! copyright 1974...peace and love,man!....though a little late...)
i'm fascinated by trailers, gypsy bardos**,any kind of home on wheels.i'm a person who likes to stay home, but if i could take my home WITH me and travel...wouln't that be cool? the ones they sell these days are incredibly expensive and luxurious.
anyway,i'm not a do-it-yourselfer...(well not with most things...i did publish my own photocopied zines in the eighties, though) but i thought it would be a fun book to look at.
on the way back from the library,i stopped at the local toy store. it's a really great little place, crammed full with all sorts of great toys.i couldn't find any lord of the rings action figures though....dang.i wanted to have some little hobbits to hang around with my misfit toys and yukon cornelius (that was a gift because my sister thought this guy whom i had a crush on looked like him!) and esmerelda (from the hunchback of notre dame...the gyspy girl with the tambourine,my alter ego) in her colorful tent that my sister snagged for me at a thrift shop when she worked there. oh,well.
so i just got a small package of lord of the rings cards which i use for bookmarks (only the ones i like...i don't like the bad guys!)...maybe i'll get a rare card and sell it to someone for big bucks.
money,that's all *i* care about!
**oops.simple typo or freudian keyboard slip? you decide. bardos are in the afterlife, more or less...sort of like purgatory...Vardos are the names for the gypsy wagons. i don't know if gypsies have bardos or not.
(i don't mean to be insulting by using the term gypsy. gypsies call themselves rom or romani,i believe, but not everyone knows that,so for the sake of communication,i use the more commonly used term, and hope i'm not being too insensitive.)
