unvested interest

you know you've watched a movie a lot of times and/or very attentively when you notice things like this:

why doesn't pippin have a vest like the other hobbits?

First explanation that comes to my mind is that he hasn't come of age yet, and only adult hobbit males wear vests. Or maybe it has something to do with him being a Took. :)
