when the kissing had to stop

okay diane the mercurial is back, having been distracted by the pleasures of the...
symbolic i.e. words.

i'm going to eat my supper and relax, and then i'm going to call my dad, gulp, and steel myself for whatever news he has. if i have to miss work, even though i have no sick days and therefore i will have even less income (thank goodness i have savings, even if it is supposed to be for my next used car) so be it. we'll see.

i went to the library in the rich town next door, and man,did they have a great selection of new nonfiction, which is where i usually head for first. i had a field day,or a borrowing spree to use a couple of metaphors. er,is that what they are? i found sogyal rinpoche's translation of 'the tibetan book of living and dying'. right now i'm interested in the living part. i want to learn more about bardos. he calls life the 'natural' bardo. right next to that book in the stacks, i found a book about an atheist who died, had a hellish afterlife experience, but also encountered 'the light'. that sounded really intriguing,so i took that out too.the book is called -my descent into death and the message of love which brought me back- now wouldn't that title grab you? it's by howard storm.

let's see. what else...

-why bother?_ by sam smith
i've heard of this guy before and his views seem kind of radical. of course i like that sort of thing, anyway.
i was going to copy the blurb from the back of the book, but if i do that in the context of this post,it will be too long. so perhaps i'll post that later. me and my promises. we'll see. i tend to get lazy and/or distracted. of course i have a.d.d.,because i 'have' just about everything. or at least i think so,except for hypochondria. ha ha. of course i have THAT. what self-respecting looney person doesn't?

-hacker culture- by douglas thomas

i'm interested in hacker culture, not so much because i'm a techhead, which i'm not,but because i love to study different cultures and subcultures. i also think the hacker ethic is pretty cool, especially with the ideas of linux and freeware,i think it's called,in which the information is public and shared.

-video guide 2001-
so i can find good videos to rent.it's seems to be getting tougher and tougher for me to find something i want to see. speaking of which,i'm on a jude law kick. he is definitely charismatic (or in more lowbrow terms, 'hot') but not only that,he's a really good actor. so today at the video store i got 'gattaca' and 'music from another room',which is a romantic comedy he's in that got good reviews on amazon. i also got 'dragonheart' which is supposed to be about becoming bitter about your hopes in life, and i think i can relate to that.

at the library,i got 'the fountainhead',the movie, because i'm very interested in ayn rand's ideas (though she was very 'out there' in many respects) and the books look kind of daunting. so i'll watch the movie first,to ease into the subject.
i usually like to see a movie before i read the book, because the books are almost always better than the movies.(exception: 'empire of the sun'. a wonderful movie, and tom stoppard wrote a great screenplay from a book that disappointed me.) i also got 'the winslow boy' which my friend george recommended. i was going to also borrow 'good morning vietnam' which i've seen before, but they would only let me borrow two videos. i loooove robin williams.

-my twice-lived life:a memoir- by donald m. murray
this book looked really inspiring. and in the picture of the author on the cover,he looks like a kind, wise, nice man.

-chapters: create a life of exhilaration and accomplishment in the face of change- by candice carpenter
hey,i need all the inspiration i can get. but i'll bet she didn't write this for hopeless cases like me. ha ha. if one can laugh at oneself,it is a good thing.

-making the list:a cultural history of the american bestseller 1900-1999-
by michael korda
right up my alley. i'm not really much of a bestseller reader, but i'm fascinated to find out why people like the thing they do. (because they're all sheep!!!! most people just follow the crowd!!!!!) oops,my dark side popped out there.sorry. or not.

-when the kissing had to stop: cult studs, khmer newts, langley spooks,techno-geeks,video drones, author gods, serial killers, vampire media, alien sperm suckers, satanic therapists, and those of us who hold a left-wing grudge in the post toasties new world hip-hop-
yes, this is the title, and that is the way he writes. it's an intellectual roller-coaster ride and i loved every minute of it the first time i read it. it's by john leonard and i love his writing for two huge reasons: i love how he puts sentences together and the words he chooses, and i love the fact that i am exposed to and learn so much about culture from reading his stuff.
he's got a new book out and i can't remember the name of it,but i'm going to buy it with a credit i have at the store i work at.yum.

so that's it for now.i'll probably be hysterical again later. i'm sure looking forward to that, but for now it's time to eat.yay!

Oh, GREAT! Now I have to go to the bookstore, spend MORE money I DON'T have, and add to my evergrowing pile of books to be read.

You're evil for doing this to me, but thanks for pointing out some interesting-sounding tomes!

Hacker Culture and When The Kissing Stopped, partly because I find the subjects intrisically interesting and, yes, partly because you pimped them so well.

Acquisitions Librarian? MARRY ME!

books & the afterlife

I love Robin Williams too. He had a show in New York I would have loved to have seen but I guess I will wait for the video. His new movie is supposed to be good too. Insomnia, I think it's called.

The Korda book sounds especially good to me because it always interests me, why people buy the books they do, or if the bestseller list is somehow rigged. My guess is SHEEP!! They're all sheep. I was at the bookstore today and it looks like more schlock than ever. Summer reading, I guess!

Jerry Lewis (yes, the comedian/Labor Day telethon guy) said that he had a death experience while on an operating table many years ago, and the afterlife was horrible, frightening, dark, etc. So I guess no matter how much money you collect for handicapped kids, someone up there knows what you really deserve in the afterlife. What a scary thought. Personally I thought he was full of it but I'm being good, just in case!
