i just realized that i've been listening to r.e.m. for 19 years! i feel so ancient! and i can't find my copy of 'lifes rich pageant'...it has my eulogy song on it...'the flowers of guatamala'. oh where o where can it be?

I've never heard that song, but the title sounds rather interesting. Is it thus as it sounds? :)

you mean flowers of guatamala? it's a very pretty song vocally,with harmonies...though i've always been slightly dismayed that michael stipe is harmonizing with himself rather than with mike or bill or both...he's on two tracks,harmonizing with himself. it also has a bridge with a guitar bit in it which to me is very evocative of a soul 'rising' or being released,at least for me,so that is partly why i think it is a good eulogy song. 'the flowers cover everything...well,i love flowers too and it's a dream of mine to give flowers to my loved ones when i die rather than visa versa. i want to be buried where my ashes will nourish a tree. also,this song is about amanita muscaria,which is a psychedelic mushroom and though i've never taken psychodelic drugs myself,i think there is a strong connection with spirituality which appeals to me.

you like r.e.m.,indigo girls (their first full length album was my favorite of '88,even though there was a new r.e.m. album that year. saw them open for r.e.m. as well as a little park down the road from where i used to live...they are really great live,but you might know that!),lord of the rings, and umberto eco! wow.

have you got umberto's newest 'baudolino'? i've got it put aside to look at and maybe borrow from work.i love the premise of the book....the fine line between fantasy and so called 'real' life...but his writing looks a bit daunting to me. i've read some of his essays and liked those though.

I've been listening to Blue Oyster Cult and Siouxsie and the Banshees just as long. I don't feel old. I just feel like someone who has had all this time pass in my life.

I too have been listening for that long. I miss their early sound, but I also love their evolution. In many ways their songs seemed to express what i was living, even when no one else seemed to understand me, their songs seemed to.
