guitars and the proletariat

this may sound strange, but i love the guitar stuff in new order's music.

anyway,i'm really pissed off.

at the store i work at,you're supposed to get three weeks vacation after you've been there for five years. as of march of this year,i'll have been there for five years. i was assumed i'd get that third week during this calendar year, but i called human resources and according to them,i only have two weeks vacation.in march,i won't be STARTING my fifth year hear,i'll have finished it. this does not make sense to me.
i really want and need that third week of vacation. originally,i had planned to take a week soon because i desperately need a vacation. i need more downtime at home. last year i had to take care of my mother during each week of vacation. the year before i had a leg injury that i got at work which kept me in bed the entire week and during the other week i had severe stomach problems due to the fact that a doctor prescribed a high dose of ibuprofen to me without asking me if i had a sensitive stomach and without warning me to stop taking it if my stomach hurt.i didn't know to stop because i rarely take painkillers and i thought the pain would go away after the two weeks i had to take it. i had to take it because i still had swelling from the leg injury. i have stomach troubles to this day, a year and a half later.

anyway,i had planned to use that extra week to do some sorting and cleaning of my mother's belongings as we used to live together before she got sick with lou gehrig's and ended up in a nursing home. however, now i may have to use a week of vacation to recuperate from surgery. my doctor implied that i might not have to have surgery if i have a dreaded mammogram (unpleasant and exposure to radiation) and an ultrasound...both to counteract the diagnostic weaknesses of the other...but since i have a large lump in my breast that is not a cyst and can't be biopsied by a needle,i don't see how i could avoid surgery. unless somehow they can tell by looking at it that it's not cancerous or a surgeon actually thinks i CAN have a needle biopsy. or the herbs i'm taking that is possibly supposed to dissolve tumors (but at the very least is a mild blood cleanser and i've researched them and they're all very safe...got to respect herbs and not play with them...) might actually shrink it.

even if i'm lucky enough not to have to have general anesthesia (i felt awful when i was put under to have my impacted wisdom teeth removed several years ago...not only awful, but mentally incapable of functioning, which is worse than the acute nausea) and can have it done under local anesthetic,i will still be in pain after having been cut into. and i really cannot rely on the hope that i wont' have to have surgery, though i would be glad to have a happy surprise.

so,if i only have two weeks of vacation, which i'd already planned to take in june, around my birthday
and in early october to have a refresher before the heinous christmas retail season..i will lose one of those to surgical recuperation.

fuck,i'm pissed off. as if life isn't treating me quite harshly and has been for a couple of years,i'm also working for a company that is...well,i don't know how to describe them...but of course they could care less about their underpaid proletariat. (and that's ANOTHER thing...i may not be there next year to get the three weeks...because i don't think i can afford to work there much longer...it's almost to a crucial point.

but other than that, things are great.

Does your employer have a grievance resolution procedure? If so, initiate it at once, and request that third week. If their stated guidelines say you are entitled to three weeks, you deserve three weeks.

Grrrr...that place!! They are screwing me over with my 401K.
You probably won't need a general. I had a local (I had the same surgery a few years ago) and it was fine. The recovery time was not that long. There was some pain, but I was given Rx painkillers (not Vicodin, but one of the other popular ones...can't remember) and I ended up taking about 5 of them over the course of a few days. I know everyone is different, though. Shouldn't they give you short term disability for this? Why should you have to use your vacation? They're ludicrous. I hope everything turns out okay.

How benefits are calculated usually must be set out in an employee handbook, which may have language which benefits your argument.
I don't want to give legal advice, but you may want to check that out, as well as any appeal times for benefit determinations.
