did i mention i looove guitars?

jesus,i mean jebus.

i've never heard anyone talk about how great the guitars in new order songs! or maybe it's the bass. or both. sometimes i can't tell the difference, which i feel stupid about, but it's not for lack of trying.

new order is always considered the forerunner of techno bands and maybe they are...BUT...i like some techno but some of it makes me want to bang my head against the wall. i don't like the stuff that is just repetitive with no melody weaving in and out of it. i love rythmn, which is often repititious but it's usually not ALONE. even a drum solo has some change of pace in it,for crying out loud. actually,i like drum solos better than guitar solos, which i generally don't like. (i love rythmn guitar parts more than the lead parts) and i don't like modern jazz that goes all over the place and doesnt have ENOUGH repetition. hmmmm....

am i making any sense? alls i know is that i like what i like!
and i yam what i yam!

Peter Hook is a great bassist; one of the best in the genre. He plays bass like lead guitar, which is practically unheard of outside of gothic music. I wish he had more recognition.

subjectivity

ah but music is so subjective. You definately learn this working music retail and discussing music.

Funnily enough, it was always the stripped down sound of techno, the 808 drum machines, the 303 acid basslines, and the analog sounds and repetitive/trance-inducing element that really captivated me early on (c.1993 and previous to that). I find it so difficult to get into a lot of what passes for 'techno' now. They seem like over-produced pop songs a lot of the time. I try and reserve the term techno for anything that has that Detroit feel, stripped down and intended to make you just dance. I sometimes think where the whole electronic genre went awry was in trying to prove that they could be just like rock stars and forgetting that the real forum for the genre was the dancefloor and not car commercials and MTV.

Though, there is still so much good electronic music out there that is light years away from the dancefloor. Maybe I'm just a nostalgic old fart.

I seem to remember mentioning something about subjectivity.... lol. ;)
